Barnes Resin offers high-quality products for your woodworking projects or timber repairs. It’s a complete product for any woodworking project.
For woodworking projects in Australia and around the world, epoxy resin is a commonly used material that offers several benefits.
Epoxy consists of two parts, a resin and hardener that when combined create an extremely strong substance.
For building projects with timber or if it’s a timber repair, epoxy resin in our shop is a popular choice.
Barnes Resin
Barnes Resin woodworking epoxy is often used to fill gaps, holes, and dents in a timber slab. It’s also used to bond imperfect and damaged timber together which makes it perfect to repair wood that is rotted.
The versatility is such that epoxy resin can be used on exterior trim, windowsills, columns, and furniture. The Barnes Resin can be used to add new pieces or bond existing materials together.
How to Repair Timber with Barnes Epoxy Resin
If replacing timber that is damaged or rotted is not an option, then wood epoxy can be used for basic repairs. You just need to take the following steps.
- Eliminate the source of the rot or damage
- Remove all rotted or compromised timber
- Mix the resin and hardener elements to create the epoxy
- Apply the epoxy into the areas where the timber has been removed
- Mold the epoxy to the shape of the original wood
- Let it fully cure, then paint the epoxy to match the surrounding area
Identify what caused the wood to rot or become damaged. Next, use a screwdriver and other tools if needed to remove all the rotted wood. Moisture is the most common cause.
Which means you need to eliminate the source of moisture to keep the natural timber dry or compromised timber.
Resin Mixing Procedure
Now you are ready to create the epoxy by mixing the resin and hardener together. Do not start this step until you are ready to apply the epoxy to the area.
Once mixed, the epoxy will feel like putty which makes it easy to press into the wood and shape.
If the area you need to fill is considerable, use scrap wood to take up some of the space. This means you use less epoxy resin on your project.
Just be sure to embed the scrap below the surface of the wood epoxy. In other words, set the wood scraps in first and then cover with the epoxy.
Once set, shape the epoxy so that it matches how the piece originally looked. You might want to add just a little more so that once it fully hardens you can sand away the excess. Use a metal file first and then sandpaper to get a smooth finish.
